Using the Parametric Human Model to Predict Injuries for Different Vulnerable Populations

Presenter:  Jingwen Hu, PhD, Associate Research Scientist, University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI)

Children, elderly, and obese occupants are at greater risk of death and serious injury in motor vehicle crashes and other impact conditions than mid-size, young, male subjects.  However, due to the disproportionate emphasis on mid-size men in regulatory crash-test procedures, current injury assessment tools generally do not account for body shape and composition variations among the population.  Come hear how UMTRI is working to develop new tools and methods to allow for accurate safety designs that consider the needs of a diverse population.
