Just Released – IMPACT OF RECREATIONAL CANNABIS LEGALIZATION IN MICHIGAN: A BASELINE REPORT

We are excited to announce the release of a new report, “Impact of Recreational Cannabis Legalization in Michigan: A Baseline Report.” The important indicators in this report serve as a baseline that will provide stakeholders and public health officials insights into cannabis-related injury, social, and health indicators prior to 2018, before the recreational cannabis law was enacted. The report will enable the examination of trends in the use of cannabis for medical and recreational purposes, criminal justice cases, and effects including motor vehicle crashes and emergency department visits.

As the 10th state (including the District of Columbia) in the country to legalize cannabis, Michigan created the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA), effective December 6, 2018. Although cannabis remains a Schedule I federally prohibited substance, the 2018 Michigan recreational cannabis law, and the 2008 Michigan medical cannabis law allows for increased access and exposure to cannabis throughout the State of Michigan.

This report was prepared by members of the University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center, in collaboration with a variety of agencies and institutions that provided relevant data. We especially thank:

  • Michigan High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA)
  • Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS)
  • Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA)

Read more about the report, including some of its important observations, in the press release from the Michigan Health Lab.
