Research

With a diverse network of more than 1,000 members across 35 institutions and faculty leaders representing over 14 U-M departments, the IPC serves as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration. Together with community partners and policymakers, we produce high-quality research that drives meaningful change—informing injury prevention policies and shaping interventions at the local, national, and global levels, with a special focus on the Great Lakes region.

We advance injury science through the strategic management of core and exploratory projects and multidisciplinary partnerships, all supported by deep expertise in statistical analysis, technical innovation, and translational methodologies.

Research Project Spotlight

Ivy League-B1G Ten Epidemiology of Concussion Study

There’s no doubt that playing sports has real benefits — they keep you physically active, help you feel like part of a team, and improve communication skills. But there are risks, like getting injured or having repeated concussions. An achievement of the Big Ten–Ivy League Traumatic Brain Injury Research Collaboration (TBI Collaboration), the Ivy League-B1G Ten Epidemiology of Concussion Study works to deepen understanding of the epidemiology of sports-related concussion (SRC) and improve the health and safety of current and future student-athletes.

IPC Funded Projects

Core Projects

Each 5-year cycle, the IPC supports four research projects that address pressing injury prevention topics. These projects create tangible impact, resulting in several publications and collaborative outreach activities.

Exploratory Projects

Our Exploratory Pilot Program gives early-stage researchers funding and mentorship on small research projects, allowing them to explore emerging topics, methods, and ideas, while building pilot data for larger studies.

Neurosport

Concussions are complex, and care can be too, requiring a multidisciplinary approach that bridges medicine, social work, sports science, physical therapy, and other fields. In collaboration with NeuroSport, a specialty concussion clinic at the University of Michigan that serves a wide variety of patients, the IPC conducts research to advance concussion treatment and more.
